The Darwinism of Wakeskating

The Darwinism of Wakeskating

Remember the ol’ Sfumato days when wakeskating was predominately done behind a boat?  With the development of wakeskating and the increasing overall technicality of tricks being thrown everyday, it’s obvious why riders are choosing to take a different approach to riding.  And, of course, we having to drain your pockets to pay for filling up your boat is another obvious reason.  But, is riding behind a boat becoming a thing of the past for new, up-and-coming wakeskaters?

I do not necessarily think so, however, the influences of wakeskating are definitely taking more of a turn towards winch, cable, and PWC; and have ben doing so for quite some time.  Who can deny it, though?  You can learn so much behind the ski, and at a faster pace; you can hit spots that are considered unthinkable with a winch; and cables are popping up all over the place.  Getting out there behind the boat, unfortunately, seems as though it may become a lost art. Daniel Grant – Seven Eleven Wakeskate edit by Andy Kolb

Andy Kolb was recently down at Thai Wake Park alongside young Liquid Force phenom, Daniel Grant, who decided he wanted to focus on wakeskating for the day. What ensued was a candy and potato chip fueled wakeskating fit that ended up being one of the most intense skate edits that we’ve ever seen. I can only imagine what Daniel’s scheming on his wakeboard these days…

Wakeskating the Banaue Rice Terraces | Red Bull Winch Sessions

Professional wakeskaters Brian Grubb (USA) and Dominik Preisner (GER) travelled to the Philippines to have an epic winch session at one of the most beautiful spots in the world. The famous rice terraces of Banaue are considered to be the Eighth Wonder of the World and were surely the perfect playground for an unique wakeskate session!

Respect for the environment was a priority from the beginning of this project! The team has assured that the plants and wildlife have neither been damaged nor disturbed at any time during the project. All agreements have been made together with the locals and under respect of their traditions and culture.

The Wakeskate Tour – Episode 3 Suwannee Pro

Despite a little rain, The Suwannee Pro went off without a hitch. Unlike The Byerly Toe Jam and Retention, this setup had no rails built into the agenda. The contest basically turned into a demo of technical gap tricks featuring wakeskating’s biggest names.

“I decided I wanted to focus on the drop aspect and let everybody get real technical” Nick Taylor explains. “I’ve been catching a little bit of flack for it but once the finals go down I think people will be excited”.

The Wakeskate Tour – Episode 1 “Byerly Toe Jam”

The Wakeskate Tour is an organization that brings the most progressive wakeskating and riding spots to the public. This web series will bring you an up-close look at all the action from the 2013 Tour.

“An event like this is so unique because it’s not (organized by) a giant industry, it’s the riders doing what they want to do” – Matt Manzari.
